Tying Eyballs
By: Pudge Kleinkauf

Lots of people have difficulty tying eyeballs on their flies that stay in place and don't roll around the hook. This is particularly true when tying large, heavy dumbell eyes. The problem is that the figure-eight method, by itself, just doesn't do it. Well, whether you're attaching dumbells or bead chain eyeballs, here's a foolproof way to get them to stay where you want them.

#1 Select eyeballs that are proportional to the size of the hook so as to get the right look to the fly and avoid having the eyeballs over balance the fly.

#2 Attach eyeballs before tying the rest of the fly That avoids having material get in the way or mis-calculating how much room to leave for the eyes.

#3 Create a thread base on which to set the eyeballs so they don't slide around as much while you're working with them. (But avoid making a huge mound of thread. That will only create more problems in trying to balance the eyeballs).

#4 When attaching, set the eyeballs on the hook by holding the eyeball that is the closest to you between the fingernails of the thumb and index finger of your non-dominant hand.

#5 Now wrap five or six thread wraps around the eyeball that is farthest away from you.

#6 Next hold the eyeball that is farthest away from you and make five or six thread wraps around the eyeball that is closest to you.

#7 Now make several thread wraps in front of the eyeballs and then in back.

#8 Next start your figure-eight wraps. The figure-eight wraps the thread over one eyeball, under the hook and then over the other eyeball.

#9 As you wrap, intersperse the figure-eight wraps with wraps that are made over just one eyeball and then over the other (as in steps # 4 and 5) until the eyes are secure.

#10 Make several thread wraps in front of the eyeballs and then behind before taking your thread down the hook to attach your other materials.

#11 Do your whip finish behind the eyeballs.
