Bead-head Soft-Hackle Pheasant Tail
by Rich Johnson

Thread: 6/0 or 8/0 black
Hook: #12 2X-long nymph hook
Beadhead: Copper
Rib: Copper wire, fine
Tail: Pheasant tail fibers
Abdomen: Pheasant tail fibers
Thorax: Peacock herl
Hackle: Partridge

Slip the bead onto your hook. Placing the small hole towards the hook eye. (You may have to debard the hook first.)
Select 4-6 of the longest fibers from the base of the center tail of a male ring neck pheasant. (The outside fibers of the two feathers behind the center feather behind the center feather will also work well.)
Start your tying tread behind the bead-head, attaching the rib as you wrap your thread rearwards. Attach the tail using 3 tight wraps. Do not cut the fibers.
Twist the fibers like a rope and wrap forward (2/3 of the body length). Secure and clip excess.
Attach 4-6 strands of peacock herl and wrap full to create the thorax.
Counter wrap the copper wire to reinforce the entire body.
Select a well marked soft hackle (partridge), clean the base and tie in the tip right behind the bead.
Fold and wrap the hackle. Tie off and whipfinish.
