May'S FLY: Everglow Fly

The Everglow Fly is a popular fly for both Pacific Salmon and Steelhead. It is a particularly effective fly for king salmon, most commonly tied in orange, chartreuse and white body with and orange wing and hackle. These flies are at their best in low light conditions and glow brighter after exposure to a flash light.
Thread: 3/0 white, orange
Hook: #1/0-4 #3407 or similar
Lead: .025 or .030
Underbody: Chenille, white
Tail: Frayed tubing
Body: Everglow tubing, Orange
Underwing: Calftail, orange
Wing: Everglow strands, orange
Hackle: Saddle hackle, orange

Wrap the lead on the hook shank, starting above the point and ending 1/3 back of the eye. Secure with tying thread.
Tie in chenille and wrap over lead. Tie off, clip excess, and bring thread to the rear.
Cut a piece of tubing the length of the hook. Unravel the rear slightly. Slip the tubing over the hook eye and work the thread through the unraveled fibers.
Holding the tail with your left hand, place two loose wraps around the tubing just behind the underbody. Tighten the wraps and secure with a whip finish.
Holding the tag end of the thread in your left hand place two loose wraps around the front of the tubing just in front of the underbody. Tighten the wraps and bind the loose ends down to the shank.
Tie in a sparse underwing of calt tail. the underwing should be just shorter than the tail.
Tie in the wing of Everglow fibers. Cut to the length just longer than the tail.
Tie in the hackle by its tip and wrap as a collar over the wing thread wraps. Secure and trim the excess.
Whip finish the head and cement both the head and tail wrappings.
