| "I tried to get into the day-parking at the Russian on Saturday and found that there were so many people waiting that I decided I'd
do the lower Kenai instead. I got to the lower Kenai and casted around without much success. The water was very high - not at all like it is in
the fall. After casting for an hour I was just about to head downstream when I heard a small splash in an area of calm water behind a sandbar that
was just underwater by inches. I casted a flesh pattern and the rainbow in
the attached photo latched onto my fly and went airborne. I at first thought it was an early jack king salmon that had already started turning
colors. I only had 8 lb test line and knew I had to play this fish very gently or he would break off. After about a 20
minute battle I brought in the biggest rainbow I've ever caught." - Ernest Helton ![]() |
