Fly of the Month

NOVEMBER'S FLY: NIUKLUK SMOLT

This pattern is compliments of past AFF President Bob Churchill. On occassion, Bob has the opportunity to travel to remote locations within Alaska and find new fly patterns.
Thread: Black and Red 6/0 or 8/0
Hook: 3XL or 4XL #8-10
Tail: Frayed tubing from body
Body: Silver Mylar tubing, fine
Under Wing(1/4): White Calf Tail Wing(1/2): Olive Calf Tail Over Wing(1/4): Rusty Brown Calf Tail

Cut the tubing as long as the entire hook length (This is a #8 3XL). Remove the cotton core and slide it over the hook.
Using the black thread, bind the tubing at the head of the hook first. Do a quick whip finish and cut the thread.
Bind the rear of the tubing above the barb using the red thread. Whip finish. This should leave a short tail of frayed tubing. (Trim length if necessary)
Bind down a sparse amount of white calf tail (1/4 of total wing bulk). Length should be to the tail.
Create 1/2 of wing bulk with olive calf tail. The length on this section should be slightly longer than the white underwing.
Bind down the final section (1/4 of the wing bulk) in rusty brown calf tail to complete the wing.
Build and taper a neat head. Whip finish and lacquer.
A secondary dressing calls for light blue calf tail as the center 1/2 of the wing. The bottom fly is tied on a #10 3XL hook for size comparison.
