Fly of the Month
by Rich Johnson

OCTOBER'S FLY: SEA FLEA

This formerly secret fly is attributed to former Alaska FlyFisher's president, Bob Whittenberg. Since it's inception, several steelhead have fallen victem to this fly.
Thread: Danville Plus, white
Hook: 2 or 3XL (#6 or 8)
Tail/Wing: Glo-bug yarn, white
(Polaraire and LightBrite are also popular)
Body: Flourescent Chenille,
Red, Chartreuse and Cerise
tied in 3 equal segments

Wrap a double layer of thread on the hook shank stopping an eye width behind the hook eye.
Attach a length of Glo-bug yarn aat the forward end of the shank and bind down the top of the hook shank to the rear. Cut the tail slightly longer than the bend.
Attach the Florescent Red chenille and wrap forward 1/3 of the body area. Tie off and trim.
Tie in the Chartruese chenille, wrap 1/3 of the body. Tie off and trim.
Use the Florescent Cerise to fining the body. Tie off and trim. Wrap the head of the fly under the forward wing. Whip finish.
Trim the forward wing slightly longer than the tail. (Some members leave the wing almost as long as the body to creat a veiling effect when being fished).
This fly was tied with Polar Aire as the tailing/winging material. Polar Aire is much more refractive than Glo-bug Yarn.
This pattern (tied by Ed Atwell) uses Lite Brite as the tail/wing. Ed also uses a 3XL curved shank hook for his version.
