Fly of the Month
by Rich Johnson

MARCH'S FLY: Pearl Marabou Smolt

Thread: 6/0 or 8/0 black & white
Hook: #8 3X/4X-long Streamer
Tail: 4-6 strands Krystal Flash
Underbody: Chenille
Body: Pearl Tubing
Wing: Marabou
Overwing: Peacock herl optional
Throat: Hackle fibers optional

Start the white thread an eye width behind the eye and tie down strands of Krystal Flash as you wrap to the rear. (I use #21 Krystal Flash as per Trey Combs)
Trim the Krystal Flash to 1/2 - 1/3 of the body length. Bring the white thread back forward.
Secure the chenille (white) on top of the shank as you wrap your thread to the rear. Leave the white thread at the rear.
Cut a length of small pearl tubing and slip over the underbody. Let the tubing extend just past the hook bend. Tie down with wraps and whip finish.
Leaving the white thread at the rear, use black thread to tie off the front of the tubing. Trim excess for a neat head area. (Two bobbins really help with this fly)
Find a marabou short (olive) with nice even tips. The wing should extend 1/2 to 2/3 past the body. Tie down on top of the shank. Whip finish a neat head.
Secure the aft end of the wing using the white thread. Tie the wing on top of the shank. Whip finish.
Optional peacock herl topping and throat should be tied in at this point. Then create a neat head and whip finish.
