JANUARY'S FLY: Tangle Lakes Teaser The Tangle Lakes teaser is a popular dry fly for grayling in along the Denali Highway. It is a highly visible and bouyant fly that has also been successful for rainbows in still water. |

1. Attach your tying thread approximately
1/4 shank length behind the eye,
wrapping your thread towards the rear. |
![]() |
2. Wrap a thread base to the bend and
then foward to your starting point. |
![]() |
3. The deer hair I prefer is Sitka Blacktail.
The hair is shorter than whitetail and has
a kinky fiber the entire length. |
![]() |
4. Cut a small amount of deer hair and
stack the tips. Measure the length so
that the tips extend beond the body
past the bend by approximately a hook
gape. |

5. Attach the deer hair flush with start point. |
![]() |
6. Bind the butt end tightly with several
wraps of thread. |
![]() |
7. Wrap back lightly, binding the deer hair
on top of the shank. At the rear of the
body tightly bind the hair to the shank.
This creates an air-filled underbody. |

8. Attach the hackle, tip first, at the rear.
(A quality saddle hackle works best) |
![]() |
9. Dub orange fur very sparsely on the thread. Just
thick enough to create a solid color. |
![]() |
10. Wrap lightly over the underbody, being
careful not to crush the deer hair. |
![]() |
11. Palmer the hackle foward using 4 or 5 wraps. Tie
off and clip excess. |
![]() |
12. Select a bunch of deer hair half
again as thick as t he tail/underbody. Stack the
tips. Measure the length to be as long as
the tail/underbody. |
![]() |
13. Trim the butt s and tie in the wing on the
front 1/4 of the hook shank. |
![]() |
14. Avoid excess thread wraps, use a few
firm wraps to bind the hair. |
![]() |
15. Tie in a grizzly hackle by the butt. Take the
thread foward to just behind the eye. |
![]() |
16. Wrap the hackle as densely as possible.
(Spiral three wraps foward, three back-
wards, and three foward if possible.
Again, quality saddle hackle works best) |

17. Tie off, whip finish, and head cement. |
